This novel will be mostly about COD: MW2 as this is the game i have played the longest and am most familiar with.
Ok, ima start with the most basics of basics, most people don't even give this a 2nd thought but NEVER DO IT!!!
1: USE COVER
Whether it is a box or a wooden wall, cover is your best friend. The only thing to remember is to know what kinds of cover you are 100% safe behind.
Plywood and thin Metal walls will give you almost no protection if the enemy knows your there. Even without FMJ (Full Metal Jacket (deeper bullet penetration)) your chances of getting shot through the wall are about 80-90%.
Concrete walls will usually give you decent coverage and if you were to notice yourself getting shot then RUN!!!
Most barrels that ARE NOT red are for some reason, VERY hard to shoot through if not impossible. If you see an enemy hiding behind a red barrel on the other hand, then by all means shoot the barrel and get yourself a very funny "exploding barrel" kill lol ;D
Cars can be your best friend when looking for cover...or they can kill you. If they have already blown up, you can tell just by looking at them, then your safe. If it hasn't blown up yet then a.) blow it up yourself, grenades work well at this or b.) keep an eye on it and run it it starts burning.
Use the windows and windshield to your advantage as you can shoot through them but it's hard for the enemy to shoot you. If you see an enemy hiding behind an un-exploded car then chuck a grenade at it and get yourself another very funny kill

Perks:
Perks are the lifeblood of CoD, they can cause you too drop an enemy with fewer shots, detect a claymore or C4 through walls, or do the super-awesome teleport knife attack. Perks are unlocked as you rank up in online play. I'm not gonna list ALL the Perks here, mainly cause I'm too lazy, but i will give you the link to the CoD Wiki which lists them all:

==============================================
Classes:
Eventually as you get a few ranks up in the game you'll be able to create your own class. Most people dint think about there setup but it'll play a crucial part in your success.
Ima list off 3 of my classes for MW2, each is designed for a specific purpose and is setup for that purpose from the gun all the way down to equipment and perks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fuck em Up class:
Primary: RPD(100 round clips)(FMJ and Grip attachments)
Secondary: Javelin (good for anti-air and just messing around)
Spec. Grenade: Flash
Equipment: Semtex
Perks:
1. Bling
2. Stopping Power (drops enemies in 3 shots usually)
3. Steady Aim ( Good for hip firing aka CQC)
Deathstreak: Final Stand
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fuck this Game Class: made with the intent to piss people off lol
Primary: Tar-21 w/ noob tubes
Secondary: Thumper
Spec grenade: Stun
Equipment: Semtex
Perks:
1. Scavenger (resupply my "tubes")
2. Danger Close (make my "tubes" even more deadly)
3. Sit rep
Deathstreak: Final Stand
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Riot Shield: My personal favorite and is pretty much all i use now
Primary: Riot Shield
Secondary: PP2000
Spec grenade: Stun
Equipment: Throwing Knife
Perks:
1. Scavenger ( so i dint have to find my damn throwing knife)
2. Hardline
3. Commando (Teleport shield lunges lol)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first two are pretty much your standard kill people classes but the Riot shield actually took a bit of planning and tweaking to get it right. All my perks and weapons compliment each other and that in itself leads to more kills, which leads into me getting earlier killstreaks because of Hardline.
==============================================
Killstreaks:
MW 2 gives us a huge list of customizable killstreaks ranging from a simple UAV (3 kills w/o dieing) to a tactical nuke strike (25 kills w/o dieing) It's up to the individual to decide what works best for him but IMHO if I'm going for straight kills then i prefer to have Predator missile, Harrier airstrike, Pavelow or AC130 depending on how I'm doing at the time.
If I'm playing as my Riot shield guy then ill turn down the killstreaks to 3, 4, and 5 kills which are UAV, care package, sentry gun. I have gotten the AC130 before with my Shield just doesn't happen too often. Factor in my Hardline and I'll have a UAV going for my whole team after 2 kills, i think even Voro could manage that lol.

General overlooked tips.
Hit Markers:
Whenever you score a hit on an enemy you will see and hear a tick. It'll show up right in the middle of you aiming reticule. This also works when throwing any kind of grenade around a corner. If there's no tick after the grenade explodes you can be reasonably sure there is no one in the room. I have noticed that Riot shields block the grenade, thus blocking the tick, so always keep an eye on your surroundings.
Movement:
Then easiest way to detect a camping sniper or any enemy for that matter is to camp out at a spot for 30 seconds and watch in the distance for any kind of movement. Even if the enemy looks to the right or left you should be able to key in on the movement and kill them.
Auto-aim lag.
The game has a built in auto-aim feature that will aim for you to a certain extent. If you gradually look left to right and there is an Enemy hiding in the grass the game should automatically detect him and aim at him for a split second. This lag is easily detectable as the speed of your turn will slow down for a split second. Eventually you can home in on the general area of the lag and take out the enemy. This works very well in maps with Miniguns like Wasteland. i will usually jump on he minigun and scan the horizon until i get a bit of lag, then it's just a matter of keying in on the lag and watching for movement.
OK, I'm done for now, hope this helps ;D
