Picked this TV up for free off of craigslist. Powers on, but has ghostly images etc, colors not converging properly etc. Do some reading and find out it's only $20 w/shipping for the 2 replacement chips I need. So, I have started the task of gutting the TV to remove part of the main circuit board, taking photo references along the way and numbering all plug-in connections for ease of re-assembly when done. New chips should be here in a couple days. Was going to remove the old chips tonight, but my soldering iron just went kaput, so waiting until tomorrow. This is all self taught, I barely graduated high school, so, this goes to show, with a little patience, trial and error, and a willingness to apply yourself, you CAN accomplish anything. Some of these are shitty cellphone pics. TV Off/On :Notice no REDS in pictured, I turned off the red projector thus taking away the "ghost" image, but leaving a VERY blue/green display. Part of testing to make sure the chips we're the cause. Some shots for reference and with circuit board still in TV: All connections numbered and disconnected, circuit board removed from TV: And last pic for tonight as I am at a stopping point with a broken soldering iron, here are the 2 chips that need to be removed and replaced: As I keep going, I will post pics and info, wish me luck, if this works, I will have gotten a 43in Hitachi Ultrascan HD Front Projection TV for $20.83, and about 5 hours labor!

UPDATE: Got the chips removed and the old thermal grease cleaned off. Chips: Notice the white chalky substance on back of the chip, thats the "cheap" thermal grease the manufacture used to save on cost, the grease dries not transmitting heat to the heat-sink, therefore overheating the chip, and the chip goes kaput. Heat-sink after chip removal, notice I cleaned one section, and you can see all the grease thats dried up on the other section. The two 18-pin solder joints I had to de-solder and where the new legs of new chips will go. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Oh, fuck you guys too! lol

Well, after putting in new chips and days and days and night and nights of endless testing with my Digital Multimeter, I couldn't fix the reds. I was so pissed.
I ate some percocets, (my equivalent to drinking, jackyl don't drink), smoked a bowl, drug the bitch outside and smashed it to pieces with a crowbar.
I felt somewhat justified even though it was like 7am and I'm sure it pissed the neighbors off.
But, failed fucking project.....fuck...back to the drawing board.
Oh ya, on a side note, my custom PC thats somewhere on these forums I built awhile ago went kaput as well. I mean seriously, bad TV, blown PC, busted brake line on the car, what the fuck else is gonna go wrong? Built another PC anyway that is only 200MHz slower than my old one, other than that they are identical in power, except old one was AMD and this one is Intel, and I'll say after experience with both, always choose Intel.

Hey was it broke before you started? Then you have not lost anything but a little time. In addition, you got some experience, which will pay off down the road joe! Great pictures and it was very impressing effort. You can come over my little place and work on all my electronic problems any time you want. PS: I am an electrician by trade! Therefore, I have been down that road many times. Did you take any pictures of the TV in the trashcan? Very impressive.

Ya, it was broke before I dug into it so good point, refined my soldering skills. And found I like to use a desoldering braid over the lil air sucker kind.
No, I wish I would have taken some pics though. I tried to gut it and ruin it as much as possible out of anger, and to be a dick. Someone around here keeps taking the electronic shit I'm throwing out from the dumpster area. I am guessing for the copper used in them. Not uncommon for the lil mexicanos around here....so I really destroyed this one, and took out some pent up rage I had on it, and they still fuckin took it, it's gone or I would have shown you some pics. lol
I'm getting ready to do my first motherboard swap on a laptop, but that's really not too hard. I've already taken it apart and soldered a new DC jack into it. Didn't fix it, but was a 50/50 shot if it was the mobo or the DC jack. Jack $13 mobo $175+ so we we're willing to waste the $13 to find out.
